The People First movement was started by people labelled with an intellectual disability. These first members expressed that it was time for a change in the way the community identified and treated people labelled with an intellectual disability. They had a vision.
They believed that an organized movement would help them have a strong voice in the community, create a better future and take control of their own lives.
They wanted to be known as “People First”. Now there are People First groups in every province and territory in Canada and many other countries all over the world.
