About Us

People First Nova Scotia is a self advocacy group of members who have been labelled with an intellectual disability. OUR VISION: All citizens have an opportunity to live equally in community. OUR MISSION: People First exists to support people who have been labelled with an intellectual disability to speak for themselves and have an opportunity to be heard and help each other. OUR GOALS:

  • Promote equality for people who have been labelled with an intellectual disability
  • Speak for ourselves and make our own decisions          
  • Educate the community about our movement, our issues and our abilities

WHAT WE DO:      

  • Self -Advocacy
  • Help people labelled with an intellectual disability, to speak up and act on those issues
  • Leadership Development  
  • Help members prepare and give  speeches/presentations and discuss ideas that are important to them
  • Work for Social Change
  • Partner with government, educational centers and the disability community, to educate on our abilities & create awareness
  • Organize Local Groups
  • Bring people together in community, that have been labelled with an intellectual disability, so we can help each other and  work together to create positive  change in our communities
  • Focus on Important issues; members speak to and work for change on important issues such as legal rights, community supports and closing institutions
